Male Breasts

What are Male Breasts?

Male breasts, man boobs, bitch tits and moobs are just some terms used to describe the appearance of breasts on the chest of a man but what actually are these embarrassing lumps and what is it that causes some men to have them while other%u2019s don%u2019t?

The fact is the type and cause of male breasts varies greatly between individual suffers but broadly speaking male breasts can be separated into two categories: Gynecomastia and man boobs.

Gynecomastia is a medical condition that leads to the development of breast tissue in males as a result of hormonal imbalances. The cause of the hormonal imbalance can again be due to a variety of factors that will be discussed later but some examples are puberty, steroid use and hypergonadism.

The other form of male breasts are often called by the slang term %u2018man boobs%u2019 and these differ from Gynecomastia as man boobs are often related to excess bodyweight and body fat that is then stored on the chest of a male giving the appearance of female like breasts rather than any underlying hormonal problems that cause Gynecomastia.

The medical term for the appearance of breasts due to excess body fat alone is pseudo-Gynecomastia however it can often be difficult for an individual with male breasts to be able to tell the difference between Gynecomastia and pseudo-Gynecomastia and correctly identifying which type of male breasts they have. However, correctly identifying this will subsequently allow the best course of treatment to be administered thus ending this embarrassing problem as quickly as possible for the sufferer.

How to Tell if you're Male Breasts are Gynecomastia or 'Man Boobs'

Living life with male breasts is often an extremely embarrassing situation for most guys but one of the most frustrating things is identifying if in fact true Gynecomastia is present or if the appearance of breasts on the man is simply the result of excess body fat being stored on the chest.

The problem is that people often try to diagnose male breasts by themselves as they are often too embarrassed to ask their doctor for help let alone a friend or family member. The person in the best position to identify whether or not you have Gynecomastia is your doctor and as such they should be the person you consult for an accurate diagnosis.

To check for Gynecomastia the doctor will examine the male breast and be looking for any hard lumps underneath the skin around the area or the nipple. This is usually a tell tale sign of Gynecomastia as it indicates the presence of breast tissue. If the subcutaneous tissue feels the same as fat tissue elsewhere on the body such as the stomach for example, then you are most likely looking at pseudo-Gynecomastia.
